Walmart: Modern Indentured Service

Surprisingly, I’ve had people defend Walmart’s business ethics and tactics in regular conversation before. I’ve heard people brush off egregious wrongs against society as being “the norm” or “acceptable, or even necessary business practice”. I’m here to tell you; those people are assholes.

Walmart destroys the working class. This is undeniable. Those who are forced into an employer/employee relationship with Walmart (usually due to a serious lack of options, as Walmart destroys small businesses), are always on the suffering end. Walmart profits greatly from employing people they have no intention of giving raises, insurance, or potential for advancement. What is also interesting, but not surprising, is that many female Walmart employees are beginning to discover that their male counterparts are making more money doing the same jobs that they are.

Countdown to Disaster

My unemployment ran out this month. I’m flying solo, completely without any sort of safety net. If I can’t maintain some steady stream of income, it’s game over. I’ll lose my car and pretty much my only means of doing anything of importance at the moment. Luckily, I’m working at an industrial complex through a temp agency, but I’m not so sure this is going to turn out to be a regular thing. I’ve seen people who are in through a temp agency that have been there for four months, and they’re still temporary. I’m not sure if they just haven’t applied or what their situation is exactly. Either way, this temprary gig isn’t looking very promising.

Announcements

Just a couple things. First of all, I may have work lined up soon. Woo! Big hurdle crossed with that one, a lot of time and effort finally paying off. It’s only been a year since I’ve last had gainful employment. Here’s hoping I’m employed soon and from here on. Second, I’ve dumped my contracted cellular provider in favor of one of those cheap services that are typically associated with “burners”. It’s going to get me through the hard times, that’s all that really counts. I need a phone. I won’t have to go without. Lastly, if I get a job soon you shouldn’t expect my blog updates to be as rapidfire as they are now. Life is hectic enough without a job, it’s going to be far more so when I’m working again. I probably won’t want to touch this damn blog, despite the satisfaction I get from updating it. It’s quite possible that I’ll have the time but not the inclination. You never know.

Deadlines

The internet is a bizarre place. It seems to have consumed most of the social interaction we would generally take for granted before the era of Twitter and Facebook. While it did overpower certain roles, it still by no means adequately replaces them all. Job hunting is more painful now than it’s ever been. Job applications are typically riddled with questionaires that take an hour to complete while you typically find that the company won’t call you back. Things are desperate, and it’s not easily remedied. I’m going to be heading to Kinkos to run off at least twenty copies of my resume. I intend to drive everywhere within a twenty mile radius in the hunt for a job, because I have no choice. I’ve applied in person and online for over a year, and the only times I’ve ever been called back have usually involved applications in person, albeit they’ve been incredibly rare no matter what. Things are rough, and I don’t think it’s possible to understand unless you’re actually jobless and struggling. I forecast prostitution to rise significantly once most of the UIA benefits run out for our 10% unemployed. Drug sales and abuse will probably spike as well. All while Obamacare drains what’s left of a once-powerful healthcare empire that’s limping along with minimal staff and overpaid executives. I simply don’t see any plausible fixes in the near or distant future. We have a population that consists primarily of blue collar laborers, who are wholly unable to sustain themselves with blue collar jobs. Hell, I don’t know. Things just look bleak. Neither Obama nor some up-and-coming Republican are going to fix the immense problems we’re already experiencing. Don’t get me started on what’s to come. I just hope the government still has funds to subsidize soup kitchen centers, housing for the homeless, and other programs that will sustain 20% of the population in the next twenty years. If not, there will be many dead.

The Search Continues

I’ve heard back from one or two employers, I’m pursuing all leads. Hopefully something comes from all this effort, losing my car would really suck. In any case, I’m going to do what I have to do to survive. It’s just in my nature. It helps a ton to vomit random thoughts, feelings, and ideas into the ether. Having an outlet is important during times of stress. It allows you to regroup and think critically after your batteries have recharged, rather than limping along the entire time on “empty”. In any case, thanks for reading my rapid-fire garbage. I’ll leave you with some good stuff. Listen to the song below.

The Future

Depression

I really don’t think people understand how things are going to play out now that we’re reaching and breaching the “Recession” portion of our downard spiral. It’s nearing “Depression”, and it might last a lot longer than four years, or even ten years. The last time this country entered a depression, it lasted ten years, and only rebound because FDR signed “The New Deal”. Social services to catch the fallen masses were put into effect to guarantee that during times of hardship, we would persist. I surmise that the next depression we’re due for can last no less than twenty years, being prolonged by the fact that we do have social services to catch people who are downtrodden. Until the New Deal had been signed and put into effect, we really had no idea what impact it would have on the long run. Being that it was large and important, we can safely assume the effect will be broad and far reaching. That said, this groundhog predicts a long line of bone-chilling winters for many US families. Quite a few, I believe, won’t live through the coming disaster. How the government react, however, could very well determine future economic catastrophies to come. I eagerly await their decision.

Manic Scramble

I don’t really have anything “World Important” to blog about today. What is important to me at the moment is securing any sort of employment at all that I can continue owning and operating a vehicle and at least living a little close to the lifestyle I’ve become accustomed to. I’ve been scrambling to apply to any and every job opening within a thirty mile radius. If anyone out there has any tips at all, they’re greatly appreciated.

Economic Musings

Obama Economy

Democrat
(n.) A corporate slave.
Republican
(n.) A corporate slave.

I think we’re entirely missing the point when the discussion is turned to “Democrat Vs. Republican”. Citizens shouldn’t be forced into believing there are no alternatives. Life really isn’t “Black or White”, so why do so many feel that our government is exactly that? The answer is fairly simple; Corporations puppet both sides. When a Republican wins, corporations win. When a Democrat wins, corporations win. Eventually, if this government is going to be stabilized and sustained, it will require the creation and popularity of a third party- a party for the people. I believe this party should be explicitely barred from receving campaign contributions from non-individuals. The person chosen by this party as a presidential candidate should advocate balance in government, treating individuals as if they were more important than corporations. This is something that nearly everyone in government can readily admit does not happen often, if at all.
